Brown Edges in Laser Cutting of Wood – Causes and Characteristics

When laser cutting wood, characteristic brown to black discolorations appear on the cut edges. This phenomenon is not only a visual feature but the result of physical processes occurring during the cutting operation.

How do the brown edges form?

The laser beam heats the wood at the cutting interface to extremely high temperatures – often over 300 °C. This intense heat input leads to a thermal decomposition of the wood surface. The cellulose and lignin, the main components of wood, are partially carbonized. The result is a thin, dark brown to black layer on the cut edges.

This process is also called pyrolysis – a chemical transformation through heat without flame formation. Depending on the type of wood, laser power, and cutting speed, this discoloration varies in intensity.

What makes these edges special?

The brown edges are more than just a visual feature. They offer several practical advantages:

  • Sealed surface: The carbonized layer acts like a natural seal and protects the wood from moisture absorption and deformation.
  • Increased durability: This protective layer can improve the longevity of wood parts, especially in furniture and storage solutions.
  • Aesthetic contrast: For many applications – especially in modern design – the dark edges create an appealing visual effect and emphasize the precision of the cut.
  • No post-processing needed: Unlike mechanical cutting methods, sanding or treating the edges is often unnecessary.

Controlling edge discoloration

The intensity of the brown coloration can be influenced by various parameters. A higher cutting speed results in less heat input and thus lighter edges. Conversely, lower speeds produce more intense discoloration. Laser power and the type of wood also play a role – light wood shows the discoloration more clearly than dark wood.
